Never mind the Budweiser.
Here’s an incredible project by Sonny Smith, of SF-based Sonny & the Sunsets, called “100 records.” He made up names and song titles for 100 different fictitious bands, sent these names and titles to (nearly) 100 different visual artists from around the country, and asked the artists to create the album artwork for each record. That would be pretty cool all by itself, but Sonny went ahead and wrote and recorded the songs. As an extra little cherry on the cake, all of the singles can be played in the gallery on a jukebox that he created. Love this a lot.
Here’s the archived recording of WFMU’s live broadcast of the (pre?) opening party at Gallery 16 last Friday. Opening reception tomorrow night (Thursday, May 13) at the gallery. (501 Third St., San Francisco)
Another Arthur Russell song, who was so many different kinds of a song writer. Here is disco, proto-house-lo-fi, Russell. This make me want to take a very long discursive walk off of the short Youtube pier, but, another day.

Dear me, I love this song.
It’s such a joke, what he asked me to do. He must think I’m a fool. Janine, don’t go with those guys, what’s in it for you? In another day, the dream it will appear. I touched you on the arm, you were so warm. It’s such a joke, what he asked me to do. He must think I’m a fool. Janine, you know I’m your friend, whatever they say, in another day, your dream it will appear. I touched you on the arm, I meant you no harm. It’s such a joke, what he asked me to do. He must think I’m a fool. Janine, you know I’m your friend, whatever they say, in another day, your dream it will appear. I touched you on the arm, I meant you no harm. It’s such a joke, what he asked me to do. He must think I’m a fool. Janine, don’t go with those guys, what’s in it for you? In another day, your dream it will appear. I touched you on the arm, you were so warm …
These guys are not just sitting there taking this whole economic crisis sitting down. No they are active! I’m a little suspicious about sending up an “Opa!” song during the whole EU bailout. The message boards are buzzing about this one to sweep Eurovision, but I’ve got some more digging to do.
No doubt ‘fur has got Tom Dice, the Belgian.
I’m fond of the Finns, too.
From the recently unearthed demos to Nilsson’s Popeye soundtrack. I was obsessed with that record forever, and got a crap lp recently, but somehow I am absolutely satisfied with it when I put it on the beat up Califone classroom turntable unit I cadged from a school closing.
